An idol with carvings of Hindu Gods Brahma, Bishnu and Maheswor on it was discovered at a building construction site at Hanuman Marg in Shankhamul on Thursday.
The Idol was dug out from around 13 feet deep in the ground while workers were digging for the foundation of the building. The idol is 3 feet 6 inches high and 2 feet 6 inches wide. “Our didding equipment struck a metal-like thing that made a noise,” said Dev Narayan Kumar Danuwar, one of the workers. “We then carefully exhumed the object just out of curiosity and we found its was the idol.”
A frenzy broke out among locals living near the site after word of the find broke out.
They flooded the area immediately and offered vermillion powder and lit incense sticks to the idol as to show their respect to the Hindu deities. “There may have been a temple in this site in the past,” said Sanjay Thapa.
With the news of the discovery, a team of police personnel from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Tinkune, and from the Department of Archaeology conducted a field visit of the site. “We have started investigations and are preparing a report,” said Mandakini Shrestha, Under Secretary of the Department of Archaeology. “We will decide on Friday on what to do with the idol.” She added that for the time being they have asked the locals and the police to look after the idol.
